PUDUCHERRY: Five persons, including a ward level political party worker, were arrested for an extortion attempt, planned by an inmate of the Kalapet central jail, here on Monday.Those held were Rajasekar (20), Manigandan (23), Vasudevan (22), Sellkumar (21) and Rajkumar (31), said to be a local level Congress functionary.Police said that real estate dealer Mohammed Hameed was ambushed by four people, a few days ago. They handed him a mobile phone and on which a caller threatened him with dire consequences unless he handed over Rs. 15 lakh to them.Hameed refused to oblige and the youth attacked Hameed and his friend Maran. Both were hospitalised.After investigation, police found that ‘Murder’ Manigandan, a life convict, made the threat and planned the extortion bid from Kalapet Jail. The five accused were arrested. Police said that Manigandan would be questioned in this regard.
