The ill-equipped KSRTC bus stand near the boat jetty at Menaka will finally get two modern bio-toilets.
The decision will be a breather to the hundreds of passengers of the bus station that it draws everyday.
According to the KSRTC officials, the bio-toilets at a cost of Rs 3.5 lakh each will compensate for the lack of bathroom facilities which are currently not available for either the public or the staff.
“Currently, there is not even a urinal for the passengers. We have been raising the demand for quite a long time for a bathroom facility there, but the officials have been citing paucity of funds,” a staff at the bus stand said. The project is being funded by Hibi Eden MLA as part of setting up hygienic toilets across the city.
“We have already send orders for two bio-toilets. It will be installed soon. However, we are waiting to see the response of the public to the bio-toilets which were set up at the
KSRTC bus stand in Ernakulam a few weeks ago,” Hibi said.
The bio-toilets, unlike the e-toilets, do not make much use of water and are easier to use, making it more people-friendly.
“The bio-toilet is easy to use and is eco-friendly. We plan to launch similar toilets if we find the space for it,” he said.
Hibi Eden MLA said that currently a place has been identified at Chittoor Temple bus stop, to set up the toilet facility.
