CHENNAI: The Income Tax Department on Thursday raided three leading fertility hospitals and residences of doctors in the State. The raid, conducted by the criminal investigation wing, was ordered on the basis of inputs by the intelligence wing of the IT department. The raids were prompted by allegations of tax evasion.A 50-member team raided the houses and hospitals belonging to Dr Kamala Selvaraj, Dr T Kamaraj and Dr Chandralekha. Dr Kamala Selvaraj, daughter of yesteryear cinema legend Gemini Ganesan, runs the G G Fertility Centre at Nungambakkam. The State’s first test tube baby was born here. A team of 12 IT officers started the search-and-seize operations around 9 am at Dr Kamala Selvaraj’s residence and the nearby hospital located on Fifth Street in Thirumoorthy Nagar. Simultaneously, another team started their searches at Akash Fertility Centre in Vadapalani run by Dr Kamaraj and his wife Jeyarani. The third team conducted searches at Iswarya Fertility Hospital in Adyar. Four teams were conducting searches in Coimbatore and Madurai. The raids were likely to end only by Friday evening, the sources added.
