Gopalakrishnan says it is dangerous to enter into a deal without assurances.

New Delhi: Former chairman of the Atomic Energy Research Center A Gopalakrishnan has said that there was only a superficial guarantee given in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards agreement on uninterrupted fuel supply.

"The agreement pays lip service to fuel supply assurance and corrective action and both are glaring loopholes. If fuel supply is disrupted then nuclear reactors will fail to run," Gopalakrishnan said

"It is dangerous to enter into a deal without assurances. The ultimate losers are going to be the Indian people. Only the government and Western powers stand to gain," he added.

On Thursday the United Progressive Alliance Government released the full text of the IAEA safeguards agreement on the website of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Both the Left and the Bharatiya Janata Party have slammed the government on the deal and the timing of the release of text of the safeguards agreement.
