KOCHI: With the Centre for Gender Development and Ecology publishing its report on the Safety Audit conducted in the city, the officials concerned have geared up to take necessary action to ensure the safety of Kochi’s womenfolk. The representatives of the Centre for Gender Development and Ecology will hold a meeting with the officials with Kochi Corporation, the motor vehicles department, police department, and other related agencies on Monday to chart out ways to combat crimes against women. Incidents of crime against women are so common in Kerala that most of the time, women have to give up their right to enjoy life to its fullest, said Sr Mariamma Kalathil, director, Centre for Gender Development and Ecology, Manjummal.“Our study reveals that crimes against women occur in spite of them being vigilant and prepared. This shows that lack of reaction is not the reason but the problem lies with the general mentality of the society. In most cases when the girl reacts, the public belittles the crime. In certain situations, the onlookers have been seen blaming the victim, stating that the victim was wearing ‘provocative’ clothes. This is equivalent to justifying the crime and accepting it as part of the social norm. This tendency should be rooted out first,” she said.“For a city to be considered safe, it should first become safe for women and children. That is the aim of this initiative,” added Mariamma.
