BANGALORE: Sindhi College was started by ‘Sindhi Seva Samithi’, a philanthropic society working for social causes for over 50 years in Bangalore. They run the Sindhi group of educational institutions which comprise of Sindhi High Schools, KK Road, Hebbal. In 1994, they started Sindhi PU College with a humble count of just 36 students; it has grown since then and 2002 saw the commencement of UG College under the BU affiliation. Today the institution has more than 4200 students. Usha Srikanth, Faculty (English Department) of the institution speaks to City Express about its unique features and offers.What according to you are the unique features of the institution?We work towards the motto ‘From darkness unto light’. We believe that knowledge is power and strive towards achieving this goal. Our vision is to help students grow emotionally, intellectually and socially on a value based system that kindles a true quest for excellence. Our mission is to appreciate independence, confidence and to nurture positive relationship.We provide the perfect environment to do just this. We provide some of the finest amenities-a well stocked e-library, sophisticated computer, physics, chemistry, biology, and business labs among others. We also have a large acoustically designed auditorium with a huge seating capacity, an indoor stadium where the students can unwind and also a spacious multi-purpose hall. Along with these amenities, the college also extends support in the form of scholarship to deserving students. This year, the college gave `13,54,000 to 174 students. 50 per cent merit and sports scholarships are given away every year.What are the main courses offered at your institutions?We have different courses in PU PCMB, PCMC in Science CEBA, M/HEBA in Commerce in UG -Bcom, BBM, BCA, as well as the Evening College to facilitate those who work during the day.What are the extra-curricular activities encouraged at your college?We encourage critical thoughts and analytical thinking; to do this we have Mathemania-the math club, Scientia-the science club, ECO club, and Debaters’ Den. All students are a part of at least one of these clubs and contribute effectively. To build leadership qualities, we have fests - Cresindo-UG and Scind.com-PU. These fests are organised by the students, for the students and are fests of the students. We see a lot of enthusiasm and camaraderie among the youth during these events. They even make lasting relationships with their counter parts from other colleges.Our in-house curricular and co-curricular activities like Spandan- annual day, fresher’s day. Cultural week, sports week also nurture healthy competitive spirit.To equip our lot to face the competitive professional world, we provide the extra edge in the form of value added courses like certified Tally Course, Certification course from IIHT, Coaching to IIT, CET, AIEEE aspirants by Strands Edu Pvt Ltd, DotNet software Testing course, Diploma in Practical Accounting for PU, Personality Development Course, etc. They can learn and be certified for the courses in the campus itself.For our students to gain practical knowledge, we organise study tours to different companies and factories inside and outside the state, wherein they interact with top executive thus getting a real feel of the world aheadHow about your focus on campus recruitment?We have many companies visiting our campus like Infosys, Dell, Wipro, Deutsche Bank, IBM, Hyundai, TESCO, HP, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Tally Solutions, Fidelity Investments, Ernst and Young etc. Sindhi college has left no stone unturned in catering to the needs in the best interest of its students and so has been recognised as an ‘A’ grade college by the PU board. We are taking all the necessary initiatives to keep up with the competition. Our students have progressed well in all the fields so far and we hope this will continue.
