Dont keep officials suspended

The Madras High Court has suggested to the government not to keep any official under suspension for a long time and allow him to draw his subsistence allowance or salary without extracting any work from him as the same will result in  loss to the public exchequer.

Justice S Nagamuthu gave the suggestion recently, while ordering the revocation of an order suspending D Gunasekaran, who at the relevant point of time worked as DSP, Oddanchathiram sub-division in Theni district, in 2011.

According to advocates Bala and Daisy, the charge against Gunasekaran was that he did not arrest the persons accused of gheraoeing one Jambulingam on April 7 last year during the Assembly elections. A lower court granted advance bail to the accused. By April 12 last year, he was placed under suspension. Hence, the present writ petition to quash the suspension order.

Bala contended that the continued suspension was unnecessary as the enquiry officer had held that the charge had not been proved. Disposing of the petition, the judge observed that since the charge had not been proved, there would be no purpose in keeping the petitioner under continued suspension.

The charge levelled against him was also not serious in nature, the judge added, and ordered the revocation of the suspension order.
