BJP says UT is facing a huge financial crisis; the proposed site also not ideal

BJP State secretary R V Saminathan has urged the government not to go ahead with its plan to build a new legislature complex at a time when they are facing a financial crunch.

He said that construction of the complex would cost crores to the exchequer and the government was already behind on other projects like construction of Kamarajar Manimandapam, electronics park and the special economic zone. He added that government could not find enough funds for the schemes announced in the budget.

Saminathan said that the proposed site was not ideal as it was situated close to one of the busiest traffic junctions in Puducherry.

Chief Minister Rangasamy had announced in July that the government had proposed to acquire land at Thattanchavady for construction of the new building.

He added that three main hospitals were situated close to the proposed area. Saminathan also pointed out that a 45-minutes traffic jam occurred during the garlanding of Rajiv Gandhi’s statue on the occasion of his birth anniversary. If such a jam occurred people in need of emergency medical care could lose their lives.

Saminathan suggested that the area of the old maternity hospital, which is situated close to the present assembly building, may be utilised for the new complex.

The BJP leader said that if the government went ahead with the plan, his party would stage an agitation.
