BHUBANESWAR: The Water Resources Department has drawn up schemes to provide water for cultivation from different rivers and reservoirs in the drought-affected areas of the State through 15,000 check dams and 174 mega lift points. Official sources said 5,000 check dams will be completed by June. The State Government had made a provision of ` 200 crore in 2011-12 for construction of check dams while it has been proposed to provide ` 175 crore more in 2012-13. It has been decided that check dams will be constructed on small rivers and ‘nullahs’ having width between 10 to 50 metre. The Panchayati Raj Department will, however, construct 10,000 more check dams on nullahs with a width of less than 10 metre. The scheme will be done through the blocks. Under the mega lift point scheme, water will be provided within a radius of 10 to 15 km by drawing water from rivers and reservoirs with the help of high-powered motors. The State Government has made a provision of ` 150 crore in 2012-13 for implementation of the scheme. Separate 33- KV electricity lines will be drawn for running the mega lift points. Principal Secretary, Water Resources Department, Suresh Chandra Mohapatra said last year the Government had made a provision of ` 50 crore for implementation of the project.
