CHENNAI: Supporters of Hindu Maha Sabha staged a demonstration at Palavaram on Monday, demanding that the State Government take steps to close a plastic recycling unit at Chromepet, which is allegedly causing health hazards to residents. According to Veera Vasanthakumar, state president, Hindu Maha Sabha, the recycling company at Rangasamy Street, East Puduvai Nagar emits toxic gases, including vinyl chloride, ethylene oxide and xylene. He said that these chemicals were responsible for causing various diseases. “About eight to 10 residents in Puduvai Nagar and Chamber Colony are complaining of bleeding from the ears and cancer risks due to the pollutant gases released from the recycling unit,” he alleged. He also said that ei-ght years ago, the company was a warehouse and was turned into a recycling plastic unit only two years ago. Even though, the authorities concerned have been alerted, no action has been initiated, putting the lives of 5,000 residents in danger, he added. “We don’t have problems if the unit continues as a warehouse. But, it should not be allowed to recycle plastic,” he stated. The members of the Sabha are also meeting the Revenue Divisional Officer at Tambaram to press for their demand.
