BHUBANESWAR: Criticising the Congress for giving a lip service to the anti-corruption movement launched by Anna Hazare team, national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha Smriti Irani on Friday alleged that the UPA government is reluctant to debate Lokpal issue in Parliament under a rule that entails voting despite its claim in favour of an effective ombudsman. Addressing mediapersons here, Irani said that though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that the Centre wanted a strong and effective Lokpal, the government is reluctant to discuss the matter in Parliament and voting. The BJP Mahila Morcha president said that the party had given notices for discussion on the issue in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha under rules involving debate as well as vote. But it has not become clear that the Congress is always giving a service to the anti-corruption movement, she said. The TV star turned politician said that the entire process has put a question mark on the intentions, activities and operations of the UPA government, Irani said and added that one can fear that Congress may again cheat and deny justice to the people who have joined the movement in large numbers spontaneously. Criticising Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his statement on Lokpal, she said that the AICC general secretary is only bothered about his constituency. Though Rahul showed concern for farmers in Bhatta Parsaul, he does not seem to be bothered about firing on peasants in Maharashtra, she said.
