BANGALORE: People are coming together at Mantri Mall to write letters to the government of various-countries accusing them of human rights violations. As part of Amnesty International’s campaign Bangalore’s letter writing day came with the theme ‘Write for rights’ which is organised between December 3 to 17. At this event, the sample letter is given to all participants to write a corresponding letter appealing to the government of a state to cut down on human rights violations or in support of a particular victim. Globally thousands of people took part in the write-a-thon and Bangalore saw a good response on the first day where large number of people gathered to support the cause.“It was really lovely to see many people give up time with their families to help make a difference in somebody else’s life, somebody who is so wholly unconnected to them,” said Dharitri Datar, a volunteer. The event is entirely organised by student volunteers studying in Pre-university colleges in different parts of Bangloare. Many of the letters written by participants were appreciated by the organisers for their concern towards others life. Several case studies were considered for the year at the event. One among the case study revealed that Jean Claude Roger Mbede, a 31 year old student is currently serving a 3 year prison sentence in Cameroon as a result of his sexual orientation. Another study revealed that Christie Cheramie is serving a life sentence in Louisiana and imprisioned at the age of 16 on a murder count.Expressing her view about the initiative of the event, Dharitri said, “I filled out a form and was selected to manage the Bangalore event. I was able to put all of this together with the help of two of my friends Priyanka HP and Manisha, both students.”
