KOCHI: As the college managements failed to come up with explanation sought by the Fee Regulatory Committee for Self-Financing Colleges, the Justice P A Mohammed-headed panel fixed the provisional fee for post-graduate medical courses at its sitting held here on Monday. The committee will modify the fees once the managements provide the explanations. The fees for various PG courses declared by the committee range from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. The provisional fees for the non-clinical subjects is Rs 2 lakh, while that for clinical subjects is Rs 5 lakh. After Health Secretary Rajiv Sadanandan, who is the government’s representative in the committee, had said that the admissions to the PG courses could be carried out only after fixing the fees, the committee decided to fix the fee provisionally. The government has already issued order to take over 50 percent of PG seats in the self-financing colleges. The committee had found that various college managements had demanded very high fees for the PG courses. The fees demanded by these colleges range from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 36 lakh, sources said. The Mohammed committee had sought explanation from the managements for demanding huge fees.In their reply, the college managements, which failed to cite proper reason for escalating the fees, sought more time for submitting detailed explanation. It was after studying the fee structure prevailing in the neighbouring states that the committee fixed the fees. In Karnataka, the fees fixed by the fee regulatory committee is Rs 1 lakh for non-clinical subjects and Rs 4.5 lakh for clinical subjects. So, there is no justification for the college managements to seek such a high fee, the committee observed, sources said. The college managements have come up with protests against the committee.
