Former MP Suraj Mandal on Friday complained to Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmed about the "tardy pace" of functioning of the Commission for Identification of Jharkhand Andolankaris, set up to identify genuine people who participated in the statehood movement.
In a memorandum to the governor, a copy of which was released to the press, Mandal demanded that the Commission should be reconstituted by nominating andolankaris "who have known" the statehood movement.
Contacted, JMM leader Sudhir Mahato, who is one of the members of the Commission, lamented on its "shape and condition."
"Lack of logistics had led to the resignation of the Chairman Justice (retired) Vikramaditya Prasad recently," Mahato said, adding the members did not have any logistics.
The three-member Commission was set up on May 31 2012 for one year by the then Arjun Munda government and Governor Syed Ahmed extended the term for another three months.
The other member is Laxman Tudu.
"Can it be possible to identify in such a short period, tracing families of the people who had participated from 1939 to November 15, 2000 on January 20, 1939 Jaipal Singh had first convened a meeting in Ranchi to launch andolan," Mahato said.
"So far only about 1,150 people and families of the statehood participants are identified. We have to visit remote villages to carry out the exercise, which requires vehicles and fuel," Mahato said and listed out requirement of several other facilities.
