THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has decided to implement the Unique Identification Number (UID) programme in the state with the help of the Centre and complete it within a year. For the administrative expense of implementing this scheme, the Cabinet on Wednesday allotted Rs 140 lakh.Under this project, people across the state will be provided with a UID card with an aim to provide a UID number for each individual. All the personal details of the individual will be stored under this number so that the government will have a database of all the individuals at the fingertip.The scheme will be launched in all the 14 districts and the government expects to complete it within one year. The implementing agencies in the state will be Keltron, Akshaya and IT@School, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.The total cost estimated by the Centre for completing the project in the state is Rs 49.5 crore. The State Government will provide Rs 150 each to the BPL families to bear the expenses of taking the UID card. This will be provided with the support of the Centre.The Cabinet also decided to constitute a sub-committee to study the feasibility of introducing Right to Education in the state.The committee will be headed by the Education Minister and will have Industry, Finance, Revenue and Rural Development Ministers as members. Former Education Ministers T M Jacob and P J Joseph will also be part of the committee. The committee has been asked to submit the report before June 15.The Cabinet also decided to impose more restrictions on the sale of pan masala and tobacco products within 400-metre radius of the educational institutions. The police will be given more powers to enforce this restriction, the Chief Minister said.  Chandy said that there should not be any confusion on implementing the Malayalam language strictly in all schools and from the present academic year onwards it would come into force. I am personally against it. Hence I will seriously consider withdrawing such unwanted security elements,’’ he said.
