KOCHI: The children’s park in Ernakulam is not as active as it once was, thanks to the number of malls and shopping complexes coming up across the city. In an effort to attract more kids the authorities are getting ready to renovate the park. They have come up with a number of initiatives, including a children’s theatre to attract more kids. Parks used to occupy a major part of children’s life with swings and slides occupying their minds. But nowadays most of them seem to be occupied with their PSPs or XBoxs or mobile phones and it has become almost impossible to keep them away from these little sophisticated devices. This is the result of technology on young minds who are fast becoming addicted to them instead of enjoying the beauty of nature. The malls offer them a temporary sanctum outside their homes with arcades filled with different kinds of digital games. Children prefer malls to parks but we are going to try and change this attitude. We want them to realise the worth of parks,” said assistant development commissioner K V Abdul Aziz, who is also the secretary of the executive committee of the park. The executive committee of the park which has District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth as it’s president has taken up several initiatives to make the park more attractive. The committee has decided to create a website, which was long due for the park, to provide information on the latest happenings in the park and how the services offered at the park can be made use of. One of the initiatives to be taken up is to build a theatre where children can watch documentaries and films. The building will also serve as a conference hall to the public when not in use. As part of keeping the city clean an e-toilet is going to be set up at the park.Another facility is skating. While the malls cater to the existing needs of today’s pampered generation, the parks provide them with a surrounding of peace and a place where one can enjoy the nature to their satisfaction.
