Chennai: World No 42 ranked John Wambua Musyoki and No 15 ranked Rose Kosgei from Kenya will start as favourite in the second edition of the Givelife Chennai International Half Marathon for men and women to be held on the Marina stretch on Sunday.
Five other Kenyans Daniel Kipkemei, Daniel cheruiyot Yegon and Kangogo Kibon Totona in the men's section and Nelly Jepukurul-the world Cross Junior Races 2004 runner in the women's section will also be vying for honours in the 21 km half marathon.
Two Ethiopian runners Tewodros Shiferaw Asfaw and Rose Kosgel Ayeula Lemmi will add to the international flavour to the half marathon in which Indian marathoners will also take part.
The event is also meant to foster the spirit of youth taking to sports and highlighting sporting activity for a healthy life in this era of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, for which Chennai is seen as the national Captial.
Two other events City Run in which every citizen of Chennai from various walks of life will participate and Wheel Chair Run for the differently abled persons, will also be conducted, the organisers 'Tamizh Maiyam' and NGO Givelife announced.
The dignitaries who would be present during the event include Union Ministers Napolean and Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Mohideen Khan and Information Minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi who is also part of 'Tamizh Maiyam' a socio-cultural organisation and Chennai Mayor Subramanyan.
The prize money for both men and women for the Chennai Half marathon would be Rs three lakh, Rstwo 2 lakh and Rs one lakh for the winner, runner up and the third position respectively, the organisers announced. The prize moeny in the Tamil Nadu category would be Rs one 1 lakh, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000.
In all seven lakh people are expected to be part of the event this year.
Another noble objective of the event on the part of the NGO Givelife, would be to provide educational support to orphaned children.
