CHENNAI: “We got a call that there were cockroaches and immediately rushed to the spot with pest-expelling equipment,” informed one of the housekeeping staff at the city airport who arrived to snuff out the roaches. But, witnesses conceded that a few roaches even headed for the departure gate and would have made it in if it weren’t for the “striking intervention of the policemen”. While a few witnesses estimated the number of roaches to be in thousands, the maintenance staff figured it was only a few hundreds. By the time most of them were killed and rounded up, it took “over an hour.”When contacted, Airport Director E P Hareendranathan confirmed that the roaches had come on to the portico because of a block in the entrance ramp, but added that the issue had been cleared up with minimal inconvenience to the passengers in about 15 minutes or less.
