Chandigarh: Docs seek clarification on general seats
Medicos in Punjab and Haryana seek a clarification from the PM on the status of the general seats in elite educational institutions.

Chandigarh: Medicos in Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday sought a clarification from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the status of the general seats in elite educational institutions.

The need for clarification comes after the Centre Tuesday's decision to go ahead with the implementation of OBC reservation from June next year.

The striking medicos also decided to intensify their stir after the Centre on Tuesday decided to introduce an enabling law in the monsoon session of the Parliament to give effect to 27 per cent OBC quota in central educational institutions from June 2007.

"We are disappointed at what had happened yesterday," Vice President of Association of Resident Doctors in Post Graduate Institute for Medical Education and Research, Dr Anindya Banerjee said.

The medicos claimed that the Prime Minister had earlier assured them that the number of general category seats in central educational institutions would not reduced to accomodate the OBC quota.

However, after Wednesday's turn of events, "even the PM had not come out clear on the status of the general seats", they said.

"He is not clear how he will safeguard the seats in the general category We seek a clarification from PM on this," Dr Banerjee said.

The protestors also said they were open to negotiations with the PM on status of seats for general categories.

Meanwhile, the medicos continued to run parallel OPDs and special clinics at the PGIMER. The relay hunger strike by the medicos and interns of Government Medical College and Hospital continued, with the GMCH's OPD services remaining suspended.
