KOCHI: Advanced technology in the form of a ceramic on ceramic cup implant is the latest solution to come to the aid of arthritic patients needing joint or hip replacement. Called the ‘Delta Motion ceramic on ceramic hip replacement’, this is said to be a better option in terms of good mobility, strength and chances of avoiding a revision surgery.Besides it does not leave any debris in the blood stream unlike a metal on metal cap. “Metal ions cause allergies when they get into blood stream and this is common among women. There are less chances of fracture as ceramic is 30 times hard and belongs to the new generation advanced ceramic technology,” said Dr Jacob Varghese, Consultant Joint Replacement Surgeon, Lakeshore Hospital. He said there are growing concerns about metal ions having carcinogenic properties and it is not suitable for pregnant women as these ions could affect the foetus. The advantage of the new implant is that these are ideal for young people as very often the metal on metal implants often fail or need to be revised after a fatal fall. Dr Varghese said many below the age of 50 are coming down with arthritis and knee complaints. The implant costs around Rs 1.8 lakh as there is no Indian company yet which has ceramic for ceramic hip transplants. The new implant was put on a 26-year-old Nigerian patient who was suffering from arthritis in the hip joint caused by sickle-cell anaemia. The advantage of this technology is that it is ideal for Indian women who have a smaller body structure and will help in sitting cross-legged during their daily activities.
