DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Wednesday urged the Centre to take the lead in efforts to rehabilitate Lankan refugees currently lodged in camps in Tamil Nadu. He also said the works to create infrastructure and efforts to rehabilitate Lankan Tamils, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had mentioned in his letter to him, were unsatisfactory.
Karunanidhi’s comments came after a meeting of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO), to get the outfit’s backing for trips to be made by DMK leaders M K Stalin and T R Baalu to present the resolutions and demands of the TESO conference to the UN Secretary General, in New York, and the UN Human Rights Council, in Geneva.
“The dates for Stalin’s and Baalu’s trips to New York and Geneva will be announced once we receive concurrence from those officials,” said Karunanidhi.
He said the trips to make representations to the UN and UNHRC on the state of Lankan Tamils had received political clearance from the Centre. “Ordinary people do not need such clearance. But, since those who are going are an MP and an MLA, the Centre’s permission had to be sought. And they have given the go-ahead,” he said.
