Centre urged to enact unified labour policy

Labour Minister Shibu Baby John has urged the Central Government to formulate a unified labour policy for  hospital employees, including nurses of private hospitals in the country.

In a release here, he said he had urged the Centre to enact a piece of legislation to fix unified service and wage conditions for nurses and other hospital employees at the 43rd national conference of state Labour ministers held in New Delhi.

He said concerted efforts were required for solving the problems of nurses and other hospital employees.

The Labour Department needed to be modernised to enforce labour laws strictly, he said.

The timely revision of the labour laws should be given priority. He asked the Centre to provide financial assistance for  making the enforcement of labour laws effective.

He said the State Government was revising the service and wage conditions of workers and welfare measures with the increase in the number of migrant workers to the state. For this, the Centre should provide sufficient financial support.

For plantation workers, the State Government had started affordable housing scheme. The government has also taken initial steps for housing schemes for migrant workers.

He also called for the revision of the Provident Fund pension of workers.

The state had already started Skill Development Mission for workers for creating skilled workers.

It is the turn of the Centre to fund those who pursue higher education, he said.
