THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: You name it, the show had it; tall dogs, long dogs, short dogs, hunting dogs and even cuddly canines that looked more like kittens.  Dog lovers and breeders turned up in droves for the 24th & 25th All-India All Breeds Championship & Obedience Dog Show organised by the Kennel Club of Thiruvananthapuram at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium this weekend. For most of them, their canine pets were more like family members, and, my, were they competitive.  Take Biju for instance. On Sunday afternoon, when the competitions were still in full swing, he was quite confident that Tom, his two-year-old Rottweiler, would steal the show. ‘’Tom has a wild nature. But if you give Rottweilers utmost care and love, they are like kittens. If you set out to rear a dog, you should rear it well,’’ he advises.   Rare breeds such as Basenji, Siberian Husky and Whippet were the showstoppers at the two-day event. Majority of the remaining participants, like Pugs and Rottweilers, were by now familiar to most dog lovers in the state.   Samuel of Kowdiar reached the venue with ‘Dougue’, his pet Rottweiler. Dougue was the winner at Thrissur and Kochi. ‘’My passion towards dogs compelled me to rear dogs. If you love a dog, they would show you double the love and affection. Dogs are more intelligent in understanding a situation than human beings,’’ says Samuel.  Lali clasps three-and-half-year old ‘Puppy’ (‘Puppy’ is the name of the Pug, of course) to her heart and promises that Puppy would win next year. Lali was not disappointed that Puppy failed to click at the show. ‘’My Puppy was winner in last year’s competition. She is very diligent and a mother of two,’’ explains Lali.  In all, 25 different breeds were featured. ‘’We got close to 350 entries this time. Twenty-five different breeds participated in the competition,’’ said Dr Ramesh Kumar, secretary of the Kennel Club, Thiruvananthapuram.  ‘’The Kennel Club has been conducting shows for dog lovers all over India. Our  main aim is to create awareness among people and to promote pure-breds,’’ he said.            Kennel Club of Thiruvananthapuram has been conducting shows since 1994.
