BANGALORE: Recognising the need for development of north Karnataka, the D V Sadananda Gowda-led government has proposed a Rs 2,680-crore allocation for the overall development of Hyderabad-Karnataka (H-K) region. Touted as the Special Development Programme, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda in his maiden Budget presentation on Wednesday in Bangalore, proposed to spend the said amount for the said region. In 2011-12, then chief minister  and finance minister B S Yeddyurappa had made a Rs 2,975-crore allocation for the Special Development Plan based on the Dr D M Nanjundappa Committee report on regional imbalance. The BJP, it must be noted, had stormed to power in most of north Karnataka region in the previous Assembly elections. The budgetary allocation, therefore, can be construed as a “thanksgiving gift” to the people of the region. The perception that the Hyderabad-Karnataka region was neglected by successive governments, more so when compared to its southern counterpart, had gained ground over the decades. Even the D M Nanjundappa Committee constituted by the government to study regional imbalance, too, had recommended provision of special funds for development of the region.
