MANGALORE: Six fishermen are missing after their trawl boat sank at about 17 nautical miles from Mangalore coast in the wee hours of Thursday. The fishermen were returning home in a group of seven from a week-long deep-fishing expedition.A lone 56 year-old fisherman Vincent, rescued by fishermen sailing in another boat, S M Fisheries, was later admitted in District Wenlock hospital.A search was launched for the missing fishermen and their boat which sank with fishes worth Rs 1.5 lakh. The missing fishermen were identified as Rahiman of Panjimogaru, Srikant of Hospet in Bellary, Narayan of Koppal, Shiva, Ramanan and Bashik.Vincent said that, they set out for fishing about eight days ago in a trawl boat named Ocean Fisheries. After wrapping up the expedition, the fishermen turned their boat homeward on Wednesday. The tides turned inclement and heavy rains prevented fishermen from reaching the dockyard. “None of them responded making us further desperate. Even New Mangalore Port Trust refused permission to enter their jurisdiction,” Vincent alleged.Vincent who was found floating was rescued by fishermen in S M Fisheries while there was no trace of other fishermen.Realising something missing, Dakshina Kannada district convened a co-ordination meeting in NMPT. A consensus was evolved on the rescue and relief protocol to be followed when boats faced trouble in deep sea.
