BJP MLA Shyam Deo Roy Chaudhary, who was on an indefinite fast demanding 24-hour power supply in Varanasi, ended his fast on the seventh day on Monday after being assured by UP CM Akhilesh Yadav to provide round-the-clock power supply to the temple city.
"In a 30-minute talk, the CM agreed to his demand for providing round-the-clock power supply to Varanasi," the seven-term BJP MLA from Varanasi South, who ended his fast after holding talks with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yadav in Lucknow, said.
"The CM instructed MD of Poorvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited to provide 24-hour power supply to the city, keeping in view that the city is a major tourist destination of the country that attracts the highest number of domestic as well as foreign tourists," Chaudhary said. "After the assurance given by the CM, I end my fast," he said.
The 75-year-old BJP leader had begun his indefinite fast on May 27 demanding 24-hour uninterrupted power supply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency in Varanasi, saying the city was facing unscheduled long power cuts since Modi won Lok Sabha election from Varanasi. Chaudhary, who agreed to hold talks with CM on the request of the Varanasi District Magistrate, left Varanasi by road to Lucknow with the team of doctors accompanying him yesterday. His meeting with CM was postponed yesterday and was held on Monday at the CM's residence, said Chaudhary.
