Ahmedabad: In a major breakthough, BJP MLA Shankar Chaudhary was today arrested for his alleged role in the murder of two minority community members in a post-Godhra communal riots case.
Chaudhary, BJP MLA from Gujrat?s Patan district, was arrested on murder and rioting charges after he surrendered before a local court.
He has been remanded to two days police custody.
A senior official claimed that police have gathered ?ample evidence? against Chaudhary in connection with the rioting and shoot-out case.
The MLA is one of 10 accused persons wherein five members of the minority community had registered an offence.
On March 1, 2002 Chaudhary had allegedly led a violent crowd in his constituency of Radhanpur, firing from his personal revolver on members of the minority community, police claimed.
During the rioting, police had also intervened and opened fire at the crowd and according to the FIR two persons, Gulamnabi Sheikh and Gulam Rasool Sheikh, were killed by bullets and later burnt.
