Bihar woman gets compensation for failed sterilisation
The doctor has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh to the woman.

Patna: A consumer forum in Bihar has ordered a government doctor to pay compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to a woman who became pregnant after being sterilised by him.

Siwan district consumer forum has found doctor Shailesh Kumar guilty of the failed sterilisation operation and imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on him.

Forum president Sitaram Pandey said it was a clear case of failed sterilisation operation by a government doctor.

Ranjan Bala, in her late 30s, underwent a sterilisation operation at Maharajganj Health Centre sterilisation camp in Siwan in 2001. She had three daughters then.

After nearly five years, when she went to New Delhi for a medical check up, she was surprised to know that she was four months pregnant.

She gave birth to her fourth daughter in 2006. After that, she filed a complaint against Kumar in the consumer forum.

Siwan is about 150 km from state capital Patna.
