PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University vice-chancellor J A K Tareen on Tuesday exhorted scholars, academics and researchers in commerce to make their presence felt in policy-making by expressing their views on key issues. He was addressing the inaugural session of the 64th All India Commerce Conference of Indian Commerce Association at Pondicherry University.Experts in the field were not expressing their opinion on issues like Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Tareen said. While politicians and media were coming out with their point of view on such topics, scholars, academics and researchers in commerce shied away from doing so.Stating that commerce is the “lifeline of the nation,” the V-c urged the Indian Commerce Association to become “opinion formers” on issues concerning the subject. While stressing the need to ensure quality education in all subjects, the V-C revealed that increasing the number of universities was among the proposals submitted for the consideration of the Planning Commission while finalising the 12th Plan. Similarly, it was proposed to maintain the teacher-student ratio as 1:12 for commerce, 1: 10 for science subjects and 1:15 for social science. Other proposals to the Planning Commission included the integration of graduate and post-graduate programmes and to abolish the current system of affiliation of colleges to universities, the V-C said. ICA president Prof B Ramesh and Prof Malabika Deo, head of the Department of Commerce spoke.
