CHENNAI: Following a report in City Express titled, ‘Defective automatic doors pose problems’, on January 24, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has accelerated the process of repairing buses which were found having non-functional automatic doors.According to a senior official of the MTC, 135 buses out of the 175 semi-low floor buses were found having defective automatic doors. All of them have been repaired, the official claimed. “We have also instructed crew members at the depots to pay necessary attention towards maintaining the automatic doors as part of their daily activity,” the official added. MTC sources also claimed that `14 lakh had been spent in the last six months towards repairing the automatic doors. These types of doors were introduced in the MTC buses about five years ago to prevent passengers from travelling on footboard. These semi-low floor buses were purchased under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission project. The total fleet strength of the MTC is 3,461. Among those, 1,774 buses were equipped with automatic doors that ply in different parts of the city and the suburbs of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.
