Union Chemical Minister M K Alagiri’s son Durai Dayanidhi appears to be facing an imminent arrest in the multi-crore illegal mining case as the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) on Tuesday rejected his anticipatory bail application.
Justice T Mathivanan dismissed the anticipatory bail petitions filed by Dayanidhi after the prosecution submitted that he could destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses in the case. Soon after the development, the police formed special teams to trace the Alagiri’s son and other accused in the case.
The judge also rejected the anticipatory bail applications of the proprietors of Sindhu Granites P K Selvaraj and Surya Prakash and a retired Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited official A Shanmugavel. Dayanidhi was a partner in Olympus Granites till 2010 and has been accused of indulging in excess mining in the southern region. His lawyer had submitted that he had nothing to do with the firm for the past two years.
Countering this, the Advocate General A Navaneethakrishnan pointed to reports submitted by various officials about the alleged involvement of Dayanidhi in the scam. According to him, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Prohibition Enforcement Wing) in Madurai, A Thangavel had submitted a report saying that Dayanidhi was still a director on the board of Olympus Granites along with his erstwhile partner S Nagarajan. “The Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax (Madurai East) has not received any communication regarding the withdrawal of Dayanidhi from the firm till date,” the DSP had stated in his report. Navaneethakrishnan said 5 witnesses have testified against Dayanidhi.
