Legislators in Andhra Pradesh were on Tuesday permitted to use laptop computers inside the state Assembly.

Hyderabad: In what is probably a first for Andhra Pradesh politics, legislators were on Tuesday permitted to use laptop computers inside the state Assembly.

Speaker KR Suresh Reddy announced in the Assembly that members could use their laptops to seek information during a debate.

"During a debate, members often get information from outside through chits. But now anyone with a wireless Internet connection can get the information on his laptop," said the Speaker.

"Members can use the laptops provided to them recently in the house to chit- chat," he said in a lighter vein.

All 295 members were recently provided with laptops. The Assembly is now planning to provide them videoconferencing facilities so they can be in touch with their constituencies.

The state Assembly also achieved the unique distinction of digitising 3,00,000 pages of debates since the first session in 1952.
