Hyderabad: Dr Y Raghuram, a house surgeon in Osmania Medical College works 18 hours a day. He hopes to secure a seat at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

When he was in Class XII, he didn't try for AIIMS. He felt an OBC student like him coming from the underdeveloped Srikakulam district stood no chance.

But now, he wants to do post graduation from AIIMS.

"It is definitely going to help me because I have already mentioned to you that getting a rank below 50 is also a good rank in AIIMS. But that is not always enough to get a seat in medicine or pediatrics," says Dr Y Raghuram, a house surgeon at the Osmania Medical College.

Raghuram, for whom, reservation for OBCs comes as a boon, "Because of the 27 per cent reservation, I can get a seat in medicine or pediatrics even though my rank is between 20 or 50."

The argument against reservation is that student who get admission through quotas are not meritorious. Raghuram feels it is not the case.

He secured 92 per cent in SSC exams, 96 per cent in Intermediate exams and the fifth rank in Engineering and Medicine Common Entrance Test. He also won the gold medal in the 1st year of MBBS.

"Even now, I am the topper of Osmania Medical College with an overall 73 per cent. And also got five distinctions during my five-year MBBS course," he beams.

Often critics of reservation say quota should based on an individual's economic status. Reghuram offers an alternative plan: "Scholarships and more of giving upliftment to those who need and opening of special residential schools to backward casts will definitely help them a lot."

As the debate on reservation goes on, Raghuram is busy working to realise his long cherished dream of getting into AIIMS and ultimately serving his hometown.
