New Delhi: Soon after the developer of popular game Flappy Bird announced that he would take down the game from the Apple App Store and Google's Android Play store at midnight on Sunday, it caused a sensation and became one of the most talked-about topics on Twitter. Before the game was actually removed, most of the users installed it on their devices so that they could have fun with the bird even later.
But one such user took a different route altogether and put his iPhone (with Flappy Bird installed) up for auction on eBay. To our surprise, the device pulled in 74 bids and its price jumped to $99,900.
However, eBay later took down the sale of the device and it was removed around mid-day Monday. The item still had six more days left for bidding.
"EBay took it down. They said that you can't sell phones with apps. Which doesn't make sense to me because every iPhone has apps and they sell millions of them on EBay," Los Angeles Times said quoting Vasil Kiniv, the seller of the device, as saying.
Flappy Bird caused a sensation after rising from obscurity to become one of the most downloaded mobile games on both Apple and Google's online stores. The success of the game that based its appeal on being simple and also maddeningly difficult made its creator Nguyen Ha Dong, 29, a minor celebrity.
Users have to steer a bird between green pipes. The game was downloaded more than 50 million times on App Store alone. In an interview with The Verge website, Dong said Flappy Bird was making $50,000 a day in advertising revenue
The game was uploaded in 2013 but only surged to the top in downloads earlier this year.
On Twitter he didn't address the inflated downloads allegation but denied suggestions he was withdrawing the game because it breached another game maker's copyright.
The young Vietnamese creator of hit mobile game Flappy Bird has removed it from the App Store and Google Play saying it ruined his life.
