THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If you want to get away from the hurry burry of city life and lean back on the nature’s lap, Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is an option just about 70 kms from the city. Named after the Chenkuruny tree, the sanctuary has an artificial lake formed by the Kulathupuzha River and the Parappar dam, making it an important tourist attraction.The lush greenery reassures that you have left the city far behind. By the time your mobile signals weaken out you will find the serenity of nature spread all around you. As the hilly terrain and huge trees come into view, the west coast tropical evergreen forest welcomes you to its bewitching wilderness.   The Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is home to diverse forms of wildlife and vegetation. Coming under the Western Ghat protected zone, the major packages that come under eco-tourism are Kallar trail, Dharbhakulam trail and Kuttilappara-Choodal trail. There is also a deer park which is a must visit place.The sanctuary is covered with lush forest and has many exotic plants, some of which have medicinal value. One can find animals like elephants, gaur, leopards, Nilgiri langur, spotted deer, barking deer, boars, bonnet macaque etc. The place is also a trekkers delight as there are many landscapes along the sanctuary that are ideal for trekking.Historically, Shenduruny has a rich heritage. A recent study has resulted in the excavation of the remains of Stone Age culture from a large cave situated at the north-western part of the Shenduruny river. It was proved that these remains belong to the Mesolithic period. There are cave paintings in the caves that resemble the ones found in central India. The caves are large enough to hold 20 people at a time.
