THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 16th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala got off to a glittering start on Friday when Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated it in the presence of a large number of film personalities from India and abroad.Chandy called upon Malayalam filmmakers to absorb the good side of world cinema in their creations to enrich their movies. Speaking after lighting the lamp to mark the inauguration, he said, “Good films are the result of efficient team work. Since films can influence society to a great extent, the film fraternity should try to come up with brilliant movies that can create a positive impact on society.’’Actor Jaya Bachchan, chief guest, said to make the film festival a success, good screening and projection are two vital factors. “This is my second visit to the city. I first came here in 1991 as an organiser of the International Children’s Film Festival. This city is very dear to me,” Jaya said.Actor Om Puri, who was the guest of honour, said that Malayalis possess real passion and love for cinema of which they can be really proud. “Malayalis have great passion and love for cinema,” he said.Minister for Cinema K B Ganesh Kumar, Minister for Rural Development K C Joseph, Transport Minister V S Sivakumar, Shashi Tharoor MP and Chalachitra Academy Chairman Priyadarshan also spoke on the occasion. Jury Chairman of IFFK Bruce Beresford, veteran actor Sukumari, Producers Association secretary G Sureshkumar, KSFDC chairman Sabu Cheriyan and FEFKA president B Unnikrishnan were also present.After the inaugural ceremony, a cultural programme Destiny’s Dice based on Mahabharatha in Kathakali format was also performed, followed by the screening of the inaugural movie of IFFK- Under the Hawthorn Tree.
