Mumbai: Two students of city colleges have been arrested for allegedly raping an American woman, who is a student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Trombay in northeast Mumbai.
The students of Sydenham and HR College are the latest arrests in the case. Police claim three persons were arrested earlier and they are searching for one more suspect.
The TISS student, who alleges rape, is a 23-year-old resident of Idaho, US, and came to Mumbai in October 2008 for a course in gender and development.
She was allegedly raped by six men with whom she visited a nightclub in Deonar on April 11. She has alleged that the police did not help her file her case at first.
Strongly condemning the incident, the TISS said in a statement Wednesday: “We as an institution have always been committed to the well-being and safety of our students.”
The TISS said it was taking all necessary steps to ensure that justice was done to the victim. It urged the media to refrain from sensationalising the issue and take precautions that police investigations are not hampered.
Established in 1936, the TISS is among the premier institutes of higher education in the country. It has over 1,150 students, including several foreign students who come for various specialised courses.
