Steps

Purchase plants from a local garden store. Garden gazania is a clumping perennial that grows about 20-30 cm (8-12") in height and width, in regions with no frost. In temperate climates, gazania is grown as an annual. Gazania is grown in full sun in warm temperatures. The flowers close at night. Flowers do not open well if grown in shady gardens.

Choose soil that drains well. This plant cannot be water-logged. Add compost or other organic matter to the garden soil every year. Use organic mulch to reduce weeds, conserve moisture in the soil and reduce soil temperatures.

Water upon planting. Follow with deep but infrequent watering. The soil should be allowed to partially dry out between watering. Once this plant is established, it is fairly drought tolerant. Apply approximately 2.5 cm (1") of water each week through rainfall or irrigation.

Fertilize regularly. A water soluble fertilizer is the easiest to use for fertilizing gazania in the garden or in containers. Apply every 2-3 weeks for pots and other containers and every 4-6 weeks in the garden.

Obtain seeds from your local nursery, garden centre, or online. The seed should be planted in early spring, the seedlings in late spring. If planting seeds, use a peat and sand mix and expect the seeds to germinate in around two to three weeks. Grow in the right climate. Gazanias need a warm growing climate that stays above 8ºC (45ºF) during the night. If you can't guarantee this, they'll need to be planted in a greenhouse.Grow Gazania Step 2.jpg Choose a sunny location for the seedlings. The sunnier the better.Grow Gazania Step 3.jpg
