Using Settings
Press ⊞ Win. This will open the Start Menu. By using Settings, you'll be able to pick from a few pre-selected formats. If you want to be able to enter your own custom format, such as using periods instead of slashes or dashes, see the Using the Control Panel method.
Click Windows Settings. This will open the Settings Menu.
Click Time & language. You'll see this next to an icon with A, a clock, and a written symbol in the second column near the middle of the menu.
Click Date & time. You'll see this in the menu on the left side of the window next to an icon of a clock and calendar.
Click Date, time, & region formatting. This is the blue text that you'll find under the heading, "Related Settings." If you don't see that, you might see Change date and time formats.
Click Change data formats (if applicable). You will not see this menu option if you clicked Change date and time formats instead of Date, time, & region formatting.
Click the drop-downs under "Short date" and "Long date" to change the formatting. You can choose a few different styles of date formatting here.
Click the drop-downs under "Short time" and "Long time" to change the time formatting. You can choose a few different formatting styles for displaying time here.
Click the X to close the Settings menu. It's at the top-right corner of the window. Your changes will be applied automatically once you've selected them and closed the menu.
Using the Control Panel
Open Control Panel. To do this quickly, you can press the Windows key and type "Control Panel" in the search bar in your taskbar, then click the Control Panel search result that launches the application.
Click Change date, time, or number formats. You'll see this under the "Clock and Region" header next to an icon of a globe and clock.
Click Additional settings. You'll see this in the Formats tab at the bottom of the window. You can also click the drop-down menus next to "Short date," "Long date," "Short time," and "Long time" to adjust the formatting before you click Additional settings. These, however, are usually the same options that you can find in the Settings Menu.
Click the Date tab. You'll see this along the top of the window.
Type a date format you'd prefer in the text fields next to "Short date" and "Long date." You can replace the slashes with periods if you rather see the date displayed that way. You'll be able to see an example of your formatting displayed in the Example box at the top of the window.
Click OK when you're done. You'll need to press OK to close all the windows in control panel.
