Entering the Exit Code
Dial the United States exit code "011." Every country has an exit code, which indicates you're directing a call outside the country. In the United States, the exit code is "011." It's the first thing you should dial when calling Taiwan.
Dial the Taiwan country code "886." Every country has a code that must be entered to direct the calls to that country. The country code for Taiwan is "886" and is dialed after you dial the exit code. You start your call by dialing "011-886."
Find the right area code. You can look up a list of area codes in Taiwan online. Each city has an area code that must be dialed if you're calling a landline phone. Cell phones usually don't require you dial an area code. For example, the area code for Daxi, Taiwan is "3." If you're calling a landline in Daxi, dial, "011-886-3" to begin your call.
Dialing the Number
Dial "9" if you're calling a cell phone. If you're calling a cellphone, you need to dial the mobile code. The mobile code is "9," and should be dialed before you punch in the number. For example, if you're calling a cell phone in Daxi, you would dial, "011-886-3-9."
Enter the phone number. After you've entered all the preliminary numbers, enter the phone number. Phone numbers in Taiwan are 8 to 9 digits. For example, your call may look something like, "011-886-3-9-12345678."
Make your call. After dialing all the numbers, press the button on the phone to make the call. As long as you've entered everything correctly, your call should go out to Taiwan.
Watch out for fees. Before calling, review your phone plan to make sure you know the fees for long distance calls. Keep the call as brief as you can to avoid running up a high bill. For the most inexpensive rates,use an International calling card or VOIP services such as Skype or Google voice for international calls.
Exploring Alternatives
Use free video calling software. Video calling software includes things like Skype, Google Hangout, and Facebook chat. This software is mostly free to use. If the person you're calling has an internet connection, save money by making a video call via one of these sites.
Try an international calling card. International calling cards are prepaid cards you can use at pay phones. You simply insert them into a pay phone's slot and then wait for the dial tone and make your call. They may be cheaper than calling on your own depending on what your phone provider charges for international calls.
Call through Facebook messenger. If the person your'e trying to reach is on Facebook, you can actually make phone calls through Facebook messenger. You simply hit the "call" icon through your phone and a call should go through to the mobile phone associated with someone's Facebook account. It works just like a regular phone call and works on both Androids and iPhones.
Stay in touch via email and social media. You don't necessarily have to make phone calls, especially if they're out of your budget. Instead, you can do things like e-mail and talk via social media. This is a free and easy way to stay in touch if a friend or family member is abroad.
