In a bid to enhance its cancer treatment capabilities, Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi is set to construct a state-of-the-art radiation bunker. The new facility aims to bolster the hospital’s efforts in providing world-class care for cancer patients.

Hospital superintendent Dr Vandana Talwar on Wednesday, September 4, inaugurated the construction of the radiation bunker, which will house a high-energy linear accelerator. This advanced machine is expected to significantly improve the quality of cancer treatment at the hospital.

Dr Talwar emphasised the hospital’s commitment to becoming a leading centre for cancer care in the country. The upcoming oncology block will consolidate all cancer-related services under one roof, providing comprehensive treatment options.

Currently, Safdarjung Hospital offers free radiotherapy to approximately 2,500 new cancer patients annually. The addition of the high-energy linear accelerator will enhance the hospital’s radiation oncology department, facilitating advanced treatments such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and targeted radiation for complex tumours.

In addition to the high-energy linear accelerator, plans are also underway to acquire a low-energy linear accelerator and a CT simulator for the hospital.

The installation of this equipment is a significant investment, with costs running into crores. Previously, such advanced machines were available only at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The new facility at Safdarjung Hospital promises to provide greater convenience and access to high-quality cancer care for patients.
