London: West Ham has fired manager Gianfranco Zola after the club came close to being relegated from the Premier League.

The club announced the departure of the 43-year-old Italian on Tuesday, two days after the end of the season.

Although Zola was popular with the West Ham fans, he was unable to bring any success to the club in his second season at Upton Park.

Last season, he took West Ham to a ninth-place finish. This time, the Hammers wound up one place above the relegation zone and were in trouble until the final stages of the season.
