Tottenham Hotspur may revisit the potential deal of Conor Gallagher, with the January transfer window set to come to an end soon. The Chelsea midfielder has heavily been linked with a move to the city rivals for quite some time now. The Blues had put Gallagher on sale last summer in a bid to trim their bloated squad. Though several Premier League clubs had shown their interest in the 23-year-old, Chelsea failed to secure a deal. Back then, Tottenham Hotspur had reportedly tabled a bid of £40 million for Gallagher a few days before the summer window closed. The deal eventually collapsed as the Chelsea team management refused to send the player to north London.
According to a report by the Times, Tottenham Hotspur are “seriously considering” a renewed offer for Gallagher. As per his current contract with Chelsea, Gallagher is scheduled to stay at Stamford Bridge till 2025. Chelsea, however, have reportedly decided to offload him due to his high wage structure.
Chelsea also need to raise funds to rope in a forward. But no matter what the situation, an offer from Tottenham Hotspur might not attract the Chelsea officials. Earlier a report published by The Sun had claimed that Gallagher was unlikely to part ways with Chelsea this month as boss Mauricio Pochettino felt selling him would be a big “mistake”.
A source close to the development told The Sun, “Chelsea had been open-minded to letting the player go a couple of months ago and Spurs thought the deal was in place. But in recent weeks Conor has become vital to the team and the manager thinks letting him go now could lead to major problems in the second half of the season.”
The report further stated that Gallagher might not be a part of “Pochettino’s long-term plans” but both parties were “not in a rush” to end the tie. “Gallagher is also massively popular with the fans and the board will fear a massive backlash if they let him go and he takes Spurs, one of Chelsea’s biggest rivals, into the Champions League while they are left stuck in the middle of the table,” the source had revealed.
Gallagher has been a crucial component of Pochettino’s side this season. He has also served the role of an interim captain, replacing Reece James.
