London: Gary Cahill has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against San Marino on Friday because of a knee injury. He could, however, still be available for the crucial group match against Montenegro next week.
The Chelsea defender was hurt in Sunday's Premier League win over West Ham and has been replaced in the squad by Newcastle's Steven Taylor.
England will assess Cahill's fitness this week ahead of Tuesday's match in Montenegro, which leads Group H after four matches - two points ahead of second-place England.
Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson have already withdrawn from the squad and will miss both qualifiers, leaving coach Roy Hodgson with Joleon Lescott, Chris Smalling, Steven Caulker and now Taylor as his center back options.
