Chocolate is a beloved treat that transcends its role as a mere confectionery delight. It is a form of art that engages our senses and emotions, from the tantalizing taste buds to the alluring aroma. To fully appreciate the nuances of chocolate, embarking on a journey of chocolate tasting is essential.

If you are a true blue chocolate connoisseur then it is imperative you understand that indulging in chocolates is no less than an art. One has to very skillfully master this art and there are no two ways about it, really. Chocolate is not something that one can just keep popping one after the other, it is something that has to be properly tasted.

Here are 5 tips to help you learn the art of tasting chocolates-

  1. Cleanse your palette with water or salt less, and tasteless, bread or rice that has no aroma or flavour.
  2. Look at chocolate, if it has an even look, zero white streaks or blotches & a hint of shine, it denotes good tempering & mindful logistics & storage
  3. “With clean fingers, rub the surface of the chocolate so the inherent aromas are released. Smell this & decide if you like the aromas,” says Zeba Kohli, Chocolate Sommelier Taster and Consultant.
  4. Gently break the chocs near your ear, the clean snapping sound is preferred also denoting even tempering.
  5. “Put a small piece of the chocolate on your tongue. Slowly experience it melting. Once you swallow it, focus on the flavours it releases on your palate. See if you like it. Reset your taste by cleansing your palate as I suggest above, before tasting another chocolate. This will actually assist you in choosing what you like, which is most important,” says Zeba.

Remember, the art of chocolate tasting is a personal journey. Take your time, and don’t be afraid to explore various types and brands of chocolate to find your favourites. Each tasting session can be a unique adventure, and your palate will develop a deeper appreciation for the complexity of chocolate flavours over time.

Zeba Kohli further went on to add, “In conclusion, chocolate tasting is more than just a sweet indulgence; it’s a sensory journey that allows you to immerse yourself in the rich world of chocolate. By starting with high-quality chocolate, engaging your senses, practising mindful melting, savouring the texture, and experimenting with flavour pairings, you can unlock the full potential of this beloved treat. So, the next time you unwrap a bar of chocolate, take a moment to savour the experience fully, and you’ll discover that chocolate is indeed an art form worth celebrating.”
