The Director-General has written a letter to the District Magistrates of all the districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Many schools have been showing reluctance to enrol students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Only about 50 percent of students are eligible for admission to private schools this year. As per Director-General of School Education, Kanchan Verma, out of 1.65 lakh candidates across Uttar Pradesh, only 72,044 were given admission by these private schools. It was also found that schools harassed parents by demanding unnecessary documents. Now, a letter has been written to all District Magistrates to ensure proper admission of students. The Director-General has written a letter to the District Magistrates of all the districts of Uttar Pradesh regarding the admission of students under the RTE Act. The letter also mentioned that strict actions will be taken against those schools which will not give admission to students under RTE.

Recently, IAS Officer, DM Surya Pal Gangwar took the decision to enforce RTE in Lucknow by issuing a 7-day ultimatum to schools not giving admission under RTE. If the schools fail to comply, then it would be sealed on the eighth day. He reprimanded 62 schools, after which the Director-General wrote a letter to all the DMs of the state.

Further, government officials informed that the schools have been demanding unnecessary documents from parents despite their child’s selection and fulfilling all criteria. Director-General, Kanchan Verma also informed in an interview that the schools were trying to charge parents for building fees and other expenses under different heads. “The schools are misleading parents that the names of their wards are missing from the list,” said Kanchan Verma.

How many seats are given under the Right to Education Act?

Children from humble backgrounds can seek admission to private schools. Under the Right to Education Act, about 25 percent of seats in schools are reserved for these children. The education department has also made a rule of admission only in schools within the limits of the Gram Panchayat and within one kilometre. RTE is considered to be a human right which was enacted on August 4, 2009.
