The number of students placed in engineering courses hit a five-year high at 80.9 per cent of all those having passed the course being employed in 2022-23, data from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) accessed by News18 has shown. This is a major spike in placements since 2018-19 when the figure was as low as 48.9 per cent as well as post-pandemic when the same was around 60 per cent.
According to data, the placement percentage for engineering courses including at all levels — diploma, undergraduate, post-graduate — went up to 80.9 per cent in 2022-23. It was 62.9 per cent in 2021-22 and 62 per cent in 2020-21, both of which were pandemic years, despite which there was an improvement in the figures, as compared to previously. The placement percentage was 57.3 per cent in 2019-20 and 48.9 per cent in 2018-19.

The reasons for the major improvement last year, according to officials, were the opening up of the job market fully post-pandemic and more students being able to access and pass the courses. “The economy opened up entirely last year after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic which made companies hire more freely. Also, students with limited resources, who couldn’t focus on job search or sitting through online interviews were able to do it during this time,” said a senior official.
Besides this, the official added that placements also got a boost because of a higher number of students being able to find internships through the AICTE’s internship portal, which is a platform where students can look out for suitable roles with a hub of recruiters across sectors putting out their internship requirements.
At the undergraduate level, the placement percentage went up to 89.51 per cent in 2022-23 with 427984 of the 478096 students who passed being placed. In 2021-22, of 636024 students passing the course, 428823 got employment taking the placement percentage to 67.4 per cent. The same was 61.8 per cent in 2020-21 when 369599 of the 597664 students passing the course were placed.
In 2019-20, of the total 648938 students having passed, 397740 got jobs, taking the percentage to 56.9 per cent. The placement percentage was the lowest in 2018-19 at 52.2 per cent with only 396702 of the 759834 students having passed got recruited.
In November last year, the Council launched a placement portal for rural and tribal students linking them to industry through this platform so that they can get equal access to job opportunities. Students enrolled in colleges in these locations with limited resources often lack access to employment opportunities. However, the Council has yet to review the number of students registered and those who actually got placed on this new portal.
