Should Jay Shah file his nomination for the post of next International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman, finding successor for his post of BCCI secretary will become the biggest talking point. Shah reportedly has the support of 16 out of 15 members of ICC board and therefore, the election process to elect the next ICC chair appears a mere formality.

As per various reports, there might be quite a few contenders for the BCCI secretary job if the situation arises. Names of Rajeev Shukla, Ashish Shelar, Arun Dhumal and Rohan Jaitley are doing the rounds.
There’s could a possibility that the BCCI might reshuffle roles, with Shukla, the current vice-president and a Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha, being considered for the secretary position for a year. Shukla would likely welcome this shift, as the vice-president role often holds limited influence.
Another contender could be Maharashtra BJP heavyweight Shelar, the current BCCI treasurer and a key figure in MCA administration. However, given Shelar’s stature as a seasoned politician, the time-consuming demands of the secretaryship might be a consideration, though his influence makes him a viable option.
Meanwhile, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, with his experience as a former treasurer and current head of the cash-rich league, is also a strong candidate. A straightforward solution might involve Dhumal and Shukla swapping roles, but the BCCI often surprises with unexpected choices.
According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, there’s a consensus over current Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan’s name who is the son of late politician Arun Jaitely. However, other top BCCI officials including current president Roger Binny among others will continue into their roles since they have another year remaining in their respective terms.
Will Shah File Nomination?
There’s still suspense over whether Shah is even interested in taking over as the next ICC chairman. He’s yet to file his nomination and the deadline for the same is August 27.
The outgoing ICC chairman Greg Barclay recently confirmed he’ll not be throwing his hat in the ring for a third term.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” the ICC stated in a media release.
Shah, counted among the most influential faces in the ICC boardroom, is also part of the global cricket governing body’s all-powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee.
Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar are the Indians who have headed the ICC in the past. Shah, at 35, could become the youngest ever head of the global body.
As per the ICC rules, the chairman’s election comprises of 16 votes. A simple majority of nine votes is required (51%) for the winner.
Earlier, to become the chairman, the incumbent needed to have two-third majority.
