DC head coach Ricky Ponting said India have ample options to pick from but he there his weight behind Rishabh Pant

The T20 World Cup 2024 is a couple of months away and the Indian selectors are about to pick the squad for the much-awaited event. Meanwhile, a plethora of cricketers are pushing their cases for selection with impressive performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. But the discussion has mostly been around the wicketkeeper’s spot, given too many names in the fray.

The likes of Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel are already in the limelight and as the season progresses, veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik also seems to have thrown his hat in the ring. As the discussion goes on, former Australia captain and Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Poting has given his verdict.

In a conversation with PTI ahead of Delhi Capitals’ match against Gujarat on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, Ponting said India have ample options to pick from but he there his weight behind Rishabh Pant.

“Do I believe whether Rishabh should be there in the World Cup squad? Absolutely I do. He deserves to be in that WT20 squad by the end of the IPL, I think we have seen Rishabh play the way we have seen him play in the last six seasons of IPL and now back playing for India,” Ponting was quoted as saying.

“One thing we certainly know is that there is a lot of depth around Indian cricket, with keeper batters and I feel some guys are in really good form at the moment. Kishan is playing well, Samson is playing well and KL Rahul is playing well, there’s a lot of options there but if I was picking a team, I would have Rishabh Pant in it every day of the week,” he added.

Pant has made an inspirational comeback following a long injury layoff. The wicketkeeper-batter has scored 194 runs in 6 matches with 2 half-centuries. On the other hand, Sanju Samson has been in a dream form lately. The Rajasthan Royals skipper is currently among the top five run-getters of this season. In 7 games, Samson has garnered 276 runs, including 3 fifties.
