The first Test between India and Bangladesh culminated in a massive 280-run win for Rohit Sharma and Co. The individual performances though have had a massive impact on the latest ICC rankings for Test batters.
Virat Kohli, one of the finest batters of current era, failed to get going in Chennai as he managed just 23 runs across the two innings. The result is a sharp decline in his ranking as he has dropped five places to exit the top 10 list and is currently 12th best Test batter in the world.
However, Rishabh Pant, who was playing his first Test since December 2022, has made a remarkable entry into top 10 thanks to a sparkling century. Pant is placed at the sixth spot.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a half-century in the first innings which has seen him rise a place to fifth spot and is the best-placed Indian in the list.
Like Kohli, India Test captain Rohit Sharma also had an ordinary outing in the series opener. He managed 11 runs in the contest and as a result, has dropped five places as well to be placed 10th now.
England batter Joe Root, who is now being tipped to break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of most Test runs, continues to be the top-ranked batter. New Zealand pair of Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell are second and third respectively while Australian Steven Smith is fourth.
Ashwin World’s Best
Among the Test bowlers, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has kept hold of the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers following a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh. Ashwin had earlier scored a superb century to put India in a strong position after they suffered a top-order collapse.
India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is at the second spot while Australian Josh Hazlewood is third while his countrymate Pat Cummins (fourth) and South African Kagiso Rabada (fifth) complete the top five.
Ravindra Jadeja has risen one spot to six but Australian offie Nathan Lyon has fallen a place to be seventh now.
